Katie on the Run

There’s Girls on the Run, there’s Let Me Run and then there’s Katie on the Run. Katie had to strategically plan out her spring race schedule as she was coaching not one, but 2 different running teams at her school. In the past two weeks both seasons have come to an end.

Back in December I started planning out the season for my elementary’s runners. Because “it takes a village,” many of my fellow staff members signed up with me to coach our Girls on the Run and Let Me Run teams. Once we had our kids registered, adults trained and ready to go we had 36 girls, 20 boys and 12 adults participating in this happy, 10-week adventure.
Over the course of many weeks, the kids learn about goal-setting and making positive choices. Students and Coaches followed a training plan which teaches the basics and builds mileage and confidence. We also ran a practice 5K, just to make sure we had it.
The Girls on the Run 5K was held May 12 at Harper Creek Stadium. The girls had amazing weather and did a great job. It is so rewarding to watch families celebrate with their girls. The Let Me Run SpringFest 5K was May 19 at River Oaks Park in Galesburg. Even though it was a bit rainy and cold, the boys had a blast, with tons of energy and excitement. Our school’s boys were able to bring in a 2nd, 3rd and 7th place finish. (The girls race is untimed, while the boys event is timed.)
These programs mean so much to me, and our school is very involved with supporting the kids. The positivity, encouragement, and strategies taught in these programs are very important for kids as they grow up. This year’s goal was 50 kids participating from my school (we had 56) and next year’s goal is 70!
WSI riders also led out the Let Me Run SpringFest 5k event.

Swapping the Cycling Shoes for Running Shoes

WinterBlast 2017Winterblast Half Marathon (Portage, Michigan) 2/26/17 The 5th annual Winterblast half marathon started off warmer than many of the previous races had. The sun helped tame the 18 degree feel-like temperatures a bit. Approximately 800 runners participated in the 5k, 10k and half marathon races this year. This was my 5th year running the half marathon. It’s a great event because it’s close to home and you see many familiar and friendly faces throughout the day. Dave and Danny Share More Race Reports From The Weekend – Mountain, Gravel and a Pair of Running Shoes

Dave’s Peak 2 Peak

On Oct. 15th I did my first Peak 2 Peak race. I was totally surprised by such a great little race (800 racers) this was. Race started at the beautiful Crystal Mountain ski resort and finish at the resort! Post race celebration was awesome. The coerce was mostly flowing single track with VERY challenging hills near the end! The Fall colors were absolutely beautiful.  Definitely a race I will do again.

Danny and Dave’s Lowell 50

On Oct. 22nd  I did the Lowell 50 Gravel Road Race. Once again this was a great race, with a fairly large crowd. Weather was a little cool, but perfect for racing. The roads were in great condition. As always the hills were non stop and very challenging. It was great to see several WSI team members. Can wait to do it again in the spring!

Hope to see many WSI members at ICEMAN !!!! ~Dave

I have never done the fall Lowell race before but since I missed the spring version I thought I would do this one. This is a fun race-less crazy than Barry and the fall colors were amazing. The roads were in great shape and fast.  I raced the 50-54 age group for the first time and started in the back of the wave.  Took a bit to get through the initial throng of people but was able to weave through and ride with a small group.  With about 4 to go and left that group and finished 13th. Same time as last year (1.47) and had a great time. ~Danny

Danny Wolin RunningDanny’s United Way 10k in Marshall

10k – I woke up Sunday feeling good so entered the Halloween hustle 10k in Marshall. First time for this one and it was a beautiful day.  I started with a small group of 4 and while it spread out we were all in sight of each other.  I felt good and starting catching a few people and with about 2 to go ended up running with a cross country kid from Marshall. I would pull ahead and then he would.  With about 200 yards to go, I pushed the pace a bit and figured I could beat him but then he unleashed a pretty fast sprint and I could not answer.  Got second and close to my PR (41 minutes).

The Battle Creek Half Marathon and 5k

The first ever Battle Creek Half Marathon and 5k had WSI members involved in all aspects of the race from planning to pacing to lead outs and more! The Battle Creek Half Marathon and 5k, in its first year, brought over 700 runners to the start line. Participants got an up close view of the Field of Flight and Hot Air Balloon Show that is a tradition in Battle Creek during the 4th of July week. Participants even ran right in front of the Thunderbirds which provided a great photo opportunity!

WSI and Custer Cyclery riders took to the start line on bikes to lead out both the half marathon and 5k. It was quite the experience to ride past the Thunderbirds and on airport runways! In addition to the lead out, WSI’s Charles and Danny both ran in the event.

For Charles, the race started at 4:30 am as he helped to set up the event. Surprisingly, he was then able to run his best half marathon time to date, coming in under 1:50.

Danny loved the course, the shirt, the event staff and volunteers. He was impressed by the organization for a first year event and commented it definitely put other long standing events to shame. For Danny, the half marathon was a bucket list item that had never really worked out for him. His lonest run had been 10 miles a few years ago. With an Olympic Triathlon in his back pocket from the previous weekend, he knew the fitness level was there, but it was still uncharted territory for him.  His duathlon runs were in the 6.45 minute/mile range but knew that was probably not a good idea for this race – he lined up with the 7.30/mile pacers and that worked out well. Comfortable pace and the two leaders were good to chat with – made the miles go by quickly. A few of the miles were at a quicker pace but that was fine. At 10 miles the legs started to feel the distance and time out running. Staying with this group was not a great idea so he backed off the last 3 miles – pain, pain and more pain. But he kept the pace around 7.45 or so and finished. With all of the turns, my overall distance was a hair short at 12.8 and his watch said 7.30, officially my pace was 7.17 for an overall time of 1:35. For his first half marathon he was super happy with his performance. “I finished 30th overall and 7th in my age group (a bunch of freaks in my age group). I will definitely do it again once all of the soreness goes away…”

Lastly, WSI’s Katie Bridges ran the race too but not for herself. Katie was an event pacer for the 12:30 min/mile group. Her job was to keep runners motivated and help them to reach their goal of crossing that finish line. She did just that with a smile on her face the WHOLE time!

As a race director for this event, I couldn’t be more proud in watching how the community came together and supported this event and loved seeing WSI team mates being a part of it in so many different ways! Way to go team!

Cyclone Cindy and the journey of her running shoes

While Cyclone Cindy (as her friends call her) was a force to be reckoned with on a mountain bike, and most recently traded nubby tires for running shoes. Since December she had been training and running in the wind, snow, rain and all of the winter elements Michigan has to offer. She could always be seen proudly sporting her WSI gear. She recently participated in the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon and the Borgess Half Marathon. 2 half marathons within two weeks; a personal milestone. AND she improved her time by 8 minutes. She is not giving up on clipping in just yet though. With her two half marathons complete, she is moving on to triathlons training now.
