Hey, cyclists can be runners too!

Many of our athletes venture into more than just cycling. While some view the sport of running as torture, others find pleasure in hitting the pavement on foot. Both Derrick and Cindy have done just that over the past month.IMG_1510

Derrick has been enjoying the Run Michigan Cheap series, which is a series of running races that highlight some of Michigan’s great running paths and locations. His first event was a half marathon on the Kal-Haven Trail. Coming into the race he was ill-prepared with his longest training run being only 9 miles. The last 4 miles were filled with torture, pain and a push through it attitude. And push through it he did, with a finish time of 1:40. That translates to a 7:38 minutes/mile pace. Unprepared or not, that is a noteworthy time! His goal is to be under 1:30 for the next one.

The second in the series was tacked on to a vacation up nortIMG_0855h in Traverse City. He felt the need to add at least some healthy aspect to the trip, despite the large amount of wine that had been consumed at wine tastings. He opted for the 10k instead of the half. The course was on the beautiful Leelanau Trail. He took the overall WIN with a finish time of 43:40 (7:01 minutes/mile)! Derrick has enjoyed the race series and recommends it for anyone looking for a fun, cheap way to run Michigan.

Cindy got bit with the running bug last year after training for her fIMG_0167_resizedirst 10k. She decided this year to sign up with a group of area runners and complete Borgess Run Camp, a training program that prepares runners to the Kalamazoo/Borgess Marathon. Every week at during training runs, Cindy was decked out in her WSI gear and became known as the runner that runs in cycling clothes. The Borgess event took place on Sunday, May 3rd and there were over 8,000 runners registered in the 5 different events. With it being one of the first warm days of the year, she was not anticipatin20150503_070723_resizedg a pace much faster than 10:30 minutes/mile. However, she finished the 13.1 miles in 2:08:15 (9:49 minutes/mile): an all time personal best! She placed 24th out of 119 in her age group. The only downside to the new adventure was the fact that this event takes place the same day as the Fort Custer Stampede and she had to miss out for the first time on the mountain biking action.

Cindy is excited to be able to use this new found love for running as a launch pad into a triathlon journey.

The Traveling Circus: featuring the Bearded Ice Man

The Circus made the trip to Ypsilanti for stop #3 in the Michigan Fat Bike Series at Rolling Hills. I lined up for the 45 minute B Race with the intention of starting slow and working my way through the field. The first lap was faster than anticipated on the group split quickly. I kept the chase group in site for the first couple of laps, but the leading 4 were gone and stayed gone. The course was a mix of wide open turns and steady climbs. My 5 inch Surly Tires (thanks to Team Active) kept the rubber side down on the icy turns. I kept the effort high on the dicey course for 6 two mile laps and finished 6th image

imageout of 12. After a 30 minute rest, it was time for the Duo Open race with my friend Brian. We are pursuing the point series championship and needed to snag some points after missing stop #2 at Pando. We alternated hot laps for 90 minutes on the melting and muddy course and finished 4th on the day, keeping us in the lead for the overall point series.
#4: Even die hard mountain bike racers need to dial in their running skills every now again. 2 weekends ago (sorry for the late report) I lined up for the “not so frosty” Frostbite 5K in Vicksburg. Top Priority Goal: Enjoy chilli at the post race part. Second priority: Personal Record. The uphill mass start got the heart pumping early and I kept the effort high for a 23:11 finish time, 10 seconds faster than my fastest 5K from a couple of years ago and 1 spot away from the podium.

#5: The latest stop on the Michigan Fat Bike Tour was Addison Oaks County Park. A few miles from the home of Kid Rock, Addison Oaks has a web of well-groomed and fast flowing fat bike trails. 18 degrees at the start line, only 4 points separated the top three Duo Open teams. Our competition made the trip to Marquette for the Polar Roll and Brian and took advantage with a 2nd place finish. Next stop: Pando Winter Sports Park in Rockford Michigan.

Festive Fun for a Good Cause

Saturday, December 13th the weather was drastically different than a year ago. This time last year, we were experiencing our first major snowfall, pounding the streets of Battle Creek from sun up until sundown. This year it was low 40s with a light, misty drizzle. Perfect conditions for a run!

WSI Cycling riders were told to show up festive and bright. They didn’t disappoint. Bikes were decked out in lights, tinsel and wreaths, and even accompanied by the guy in the red suit, himself! The Tinsel Toes 5k is a family fun run through the Festival of Lights in Downtown Battle Creek.

The event raised almost $9,000 for the local Girls on the Run chapter this year. WSI Cycling were seen leading out the over 350 runners and they did it in style. Some team members opted for running instead, donning their best ugly Christmas sweaters and reindeer hats all in line with the race theme “where the ugly Christmas sweater and running shoes unite”.

Thanks again, WSI Cycling riders, for supporting and leading out local races. It sure does give a race director an added comfort knowing they have you on the course for the runners!

Harvesting Time Outside

If you are anything like me, I took a friend’s advice (who started cycling the same time I did and has surpassed me since then) by getting outside before work for a run—any run, just run and enjoy the morning.

I did, slower run, but the stars were bursting and, aside from a skunk who wanted to show me the exit to the woods, it was one of those painless deeply cathartic exercises that makes you happy and ready to face the day. Thanks Doug for the advice. Even though I will not be able to get on my bike again today (early morning start and late evening work dinner), I harvested some outdoor time before ‘old man winter’ forced me into solitary winter interval training.

There is about a month left before the Iceman Cometh Mountain Bike Race, and the culmination of fund raising for the MADC Family Support. Check out the website. If you have a family caregiver who would like a retreat, there are events starting as early as October 6. Spread the word! http://alzheimers.med.umich.edu/live-well/
